You may have heard in the media that weight loss injections can be prescribed by your GP from June 2025…
Whilst this is true, the criteria to qualify will be very strict:
In the Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire region (BNSSG) it is estimated that between 1 and 14 patients per 10,000 patient population may be eligible for these injections. At Hillview Family Practice, this would equate to less than 10 patients who will qualify and some of those might already be on weight loss medication.
Access to general practice is difficult and resources are limited, therefore we would like to avoid booking unnecessary appointments for patients that do not qualify for Mounjaro injections, as this will block access to patients that are unwell and need to be seen by a doctor.
❗️The criteria to qualify is as follows:
· BMI ≥ 40 (you will need your current weight and height to calculate this) and;
· 4 or more ‘qualifying’ comorbidities from the following list :
o diagnosed hypertension
o diagnosed dyslipidaemia / hypercholesterolaemia
o diagnosed obstructive sleep apnoea
o diagnosed cardiovascular disease
o diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus.
If you do not have a BMI above 40 and four of the conditions above your GP will not be able to prescribe you Mounjaro for weight loss. (Based on the current guidance). Hence, we request that appointments are not booked for this purpose.
If you meet the criteria, be aware that you will also be required to engage in a 9 month programme of regular sessions into nutrition and dietetic advice, physical activity and functional movement, behavioural support and lifestyle change tools.
Thank you very much
